For the whole Delta Diver Experience . . . or if you simply need glasses . . .
Wow . . . my little story took me somewhere I didn’t expect. Dana Storts, one of the OG Delta Divers who I served with in Vietnam, contacted me and told me his story about receiving a DEAR JOHN LETTER.
He was kind enough to let me share it with you . . .
Meet Jody
Less than 2 months after arriving in Country my 1st serious love sent me a letter containing word-for-word the lyrics of a new song out by Dionne Warwick "Theme from The Valley of the Dolls.”
In it, this young girl/woman asks herself basically, “How did I get where I am (in Life)?” Herself not knowing who she really was, or why she was there in this situation. It quickly became obvious where she was going with the letter.
Somehow . . . I just accepted her explanation for breaking off our relationship, and I wished her well. — And then I simply asked her to return my 65 Mustang to my sister.
Not to be the end of the Story . . .
When returning home I discovered that she was going to marry this Jody fella in 6 weeks. Not a big thing to me all considered, until one week later when my younger sister convinced us both to meet for one last time for dinner. BIG MISTAKE! 3 days and nights alone together rekindled those old strong feelings!
A week later she cancels her wedding to Jody, who I had never met. And as homesick as I was for "the good old days," we soon were married, had 2 baby girls, great Jobs, a new house, new car, new truck, new boat, 9 cattle, lots of friends, and was about to buy a beautiful home in the hills of Whittier, CA, next to the country club. And then my mind cleared up a bit.
And as I was soon to discover, for good reason. All of this hard work and accomplishments within less than 5 years of being together again came at a price. We were well on our way of achieving The American Dream . . . But something was missing. We suddenly didn't seem as close to one another. The sex was great, but beyond that an odd feeling.
I later found out that once again the words of that song started to haunt her, exactly at the same time that this Jody was getting divorced from his wife of 5 years. She and I argued one night, and the next morning when I came back to pick up some clothes . . . Jody answered the door. Instead of knocking him out, I simply looked over his shoulder and smiled . . . That moment explained everything.
As it turned out, this Jody was actually a nice guy, and gentleman enough to stay in the relationship until my youngest daughter was out of High School. Soon thereafter they were divorced.
My purpose in bringing this all up is simple . . .
Everyone, at some point during their younger years, before they jump into a marriage, children, and all of the responsibilities and demands of LIFE. . . .
They should listen to the words of that song! IES @ DELTA-DIVERS.COM
